Craig Goch Dam is one of the standout locations in the Elan Valley for astrophotography. The dam’s curved structure provides a strong leading line, drawing the viewer’s eye into the night sky.

For Milky Way photography, the core rises from the south-east during the main season (April to September), aligning well with the dam for wide-angle compositions. A 16–20mm lens works well here, allowing you to capture both the foreground and sky in a single frame.

The location is easily accessible, with parking available close to the dam and only a short walk required. This makes it a great option for quick shoots or late-night sessions without long hikes.

Conditions can change quickly in the valley, so it’s worth checking cloud cover and wind before heading out. On clear nights, however, this is one of the most rewarding and reliable astro locations in mid Wales.
